okay no i’m not done talking about this (queer doctor who). the first companion from the edas series was canonically bisexual. hinted at as early as the second book and she had a girlfriend in a later one. these are actual doctor who stories with explicitly queer companions and characters in the late 90s. the second companion of the series is also bisexual. he’s in love with eight and says thinks like “I was engineered to love you, but with the doctor it’s the real thing,” and fantasizes about sleeping with the doctor, and muses that everyone must be in love with the doctor. the very next companion is aroace. eight is the first doctor to have his gender discussed in any meaningful way, and it’s all to highlight how genderqueer he is. this is one book series. the expanded universe is full of this shit!! this was thoughtful and deliberate queer representation in the fuckin 90s! and people are still eating up clara’s “is she/isn’t she?” bisexuality. we have gotten better in the past and we deserve better now.
#anyway uh#edas#dw books#eighth doctor#doctor who#also aside from the queer rep#some of the best damn stories in all of doctor who are in the eu

damn we really don't think enough about the major world events that crowley and aziraphale have witnessed on both ends. all the horrible things like wars, discrimination, natural disasters, genocide, etc. yes but also all the good: liberation, major political reforms, the invention of new genres and materials and technology and fields of study.
like oh my god. they were there for all the centuries that women had no rights at all and then they got to witness the suffragettes, the women writers and royals and inventors and activists. they got to witness the overturning of anti-lgbtq and racial segregation laws and the celebration of human rights and identities. they were there to witness international tragedies but also the solidarity from everyone all over the world rallying for peace for people they don't even know. they got to see humans create new forms of art and fashion and the printing press and electricity and poetry and and and coloured television and music and they got to see humans constantly find new ways to find connection and love and fun and passion and their own forms of expression.
like imagine being there for everything. how could you not love the world after seeing the fall and rise of humanity over and over again in every way shape and form for six thousand years. holy shit
#fearandhatred#fearandmeta#and they didn't just witness all this they got to KNOW people from all these times. shakespeare and da vinci and jane austen#and just random people on the street or working as doctors or baristas or shopkeepers like how many STORIES have they heard#imagine knowing intimately how the world has existed from the beginning of time#I'M FINE#it's just#like do you get it. do you get it#it's so incomprehensible#it's like in their heads is an incredibly massive and infinite history book with thousands of personal experiences and forgotten dynasties#like is this blowing anyone else's mind rn#i don't think this post is even about good omens anymore#good omens#good omens season 2#ineffable husbands#aziracrow#crowley#aziraphale#good omens meta

The Deca itself amazes me, but its fandom is on a whole other level. We have one canon source material (and a few other mentions scattered throughout the Whoniverse), but the fans have managed to tinker with it so much that fanon is actually more popular than canon and more wildly accepted. And I love y'all for it
#doctor who eu#the deca#i don't think there's any mention on the book about Millennia having blue hair? not as far as i recall#and yet everyone agrees that she has blue hair#this little corner of the doctor who fandom is absolutely incredible. my favorite little corner#this post came to me while i was in the shower planning on how i'm going to write my next deca fic#it's been about TWO WHOLE YEARS since i had the idea but i can't pick the right beginning for the story#i think i have a good one now. but i haven't made a lot of progress#is the who tops my one hit wonder? lmao#(not a hit but it's the story i'm most proud of so)#but seriously i have been a deca enjoyer for years ever since i found it which was like in 2014 i think? idk#and i only read the book a few years later and i was like.... “oh. so we made up all the cool stuff about them”#divided loyalties is a good book actually but the fandom made the deca more fun let's all be honest

2024 reads / storygraph
The Principle of Moments
start of a scifi space opera series
a teen girl in the far future where humans are oppressed learns she has a destiny & a lost sister and escapes
and a young time traveler who’s given up trying to find his father through time, and is about to settle in 1812 with the prince he loves, but is unwillingly thrust into the future
they both learn their fates are entangled by a prophecy, and have to race across the galaxy, followed by a galactic emperor and the legacy of heroes from an ancient religion
#The Principle of Moments#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#this started off pretty good - interesting characters and worldbuilding; easy to read#but it felt like a bit too much was going on and I kinda checked out from the last third and didn’t care anymore.#It felt very much like the plot was just happening to the characters and they didn’t have much effect on it all.#It’s very classic space opera chosen one story! it’s fun and ambitious! a lot of doctor who vibes -#but also like if you tried to fit the entirety of timelord lore into one or two episodes haha.#It also had a couple classic space opera pitfalls.. like how this evil alien race was described as looking evil (in various ways). hm.#I actually really loved the writing style of the excerpt snippets in the beginning and would have been keen for most of it to be like that.#but also probably with the book being shorter.#there’s humor thrown in there that was sometimes funny but also sometimes awkward.#The time travelers speak very modern (despite none of it being set in the present) which like - obviously anachronism is gonna be inherent#to time travelers but sometimes it felt awkward. or like.. the other characters didn’t comment on it?#There were a couple moments that felt like a tv script gag that just came across badly on the page#gay prince romance was cute but kinda was thrown in the deep end then it’s barely relevant for most of the story.#The whole london subplot felt unneccesary. The random romance subplot the girl gets felt out of nowhere.#anyway it's decent! just fell apart a bit and didn't live up to my expectations

lately i have been thinking about code name verity once again. what if we met on a world war 2 airfield and our friendship was forged in the fire of bombs and blood and death you invited me into your world in a whimsical scottish castle and i invited you into my world in the sky and you were an interrogator and you were almost chocked to death by a prisoner and i held you while you cried and in those fleeting moments in each other's arms everything was beautiful in spite of the horrors but then we crash landed in france and you got captured by the nazis and you thought i was dead and you told the story of our friendship to keep me alive in your head while you committed one final act of heroic self sacrifice and then you asked me to kill you via homoerotic code so you didn't have to get tortured to death and after i shot you the story you wrote about us was the only thing keeping you alive to me. and we were both girls.
#blahs#code name verity#craziest most insane book ever published. desperately need to reread for the umpteenth time i need a good cry#ALSO just realising this book literally said we're all stories in the end so make it a good one#and it said stories are where memories go when they're forgotten AND it said every story ever told really happened!!!!#rip julie beaufort stuart you would've loved doctor who

finished reading "tell me I'm worthless," which was an interesting experience. I think there's something really good for you in your soul to be able to understand the genre conventions you're in and the kinds of structures and language and character that can be explored in these genres. I think about how people tend to -- with fiction about marginalisation and/or about people who are marginalised as a blanket whole, regardless of the story -- operate on a checklist of dos and donts, but mainly donts: don't ever tell us a deadname, don't ever use these "problematic" words to describe them/or have them describe themselves in this way, don't ever describe negative emotions or "problematic" emotions, don't let the characters have harmful traits (either towards themselves or others), don't hurt your characters at all actually, don't make your characters politically uncomfortable or "problematically" complicated in their political outlook and/or journey, don't make your characters be assholes ever, certainly don't traumatise your characters, and under no circumstance do you kill your characters!
which of course, this book does praaaactically every one of these things, thank goodness
#with the deadname Thing i am reminded of responses to the last of us part 2 and tbh also the latest doctor who specials#there's a kneejerk reaction as if writers/directors have outed someone's actual deadname or as if knowing that someone has#a deadname will invalidate them to a non-trans audience#lot of scar-tissue that aches around all of these points generally and horror has the ability to kick down the door on that and say#you do not have to read this story -- but this will be in this story. so if you are ready to approach these themes and these ideas#this is a safe structure -- the walls of a book or a screen or a play or an audio drama or wherever you are#my issues have very much been around social coding and not understanding what is and isnt allowed and an intense anxiety around#always saying the exact right thing at all times (not just in marginalised spaces but everywhere all the time)#(im doing it right now actually -- getting anxious about all this phrasing)#(this book is opening up pathways in my brain)#very much a meta piece as well -- it knows and acknowledges shirley jackson especially but ofc also angela carter and du maurier#and i did feel a smigeon of clive barker in there and then he was in the acknowledgements too#i have not read the last person listed so helen oyeyemi goes on the list#im reading books#alison rumfitt#tell me im worthless

I’m just gonna say it; Moira would make a much better Dr. Frankenstein than Junkrat. If you’ve read Mary Shelley’s book, you know what I mean.
#victor frankenstein wasn’t some poor unappreciated doctor#he wasn’t even a doctor in the first place#victor was a self absorbed narcissistic fanatic and his monster was an inhumane result of science taken too far without discipline#dude was indirectly responsible for basically all of the deaths that happen in this book#and he figured out how to reanimate the dead on his own without any ‘spark of life’ bs#also there as no king victor was working for#there wasn’t even a witch wtf#and the monster itself didn’t immediately go on a murderous rampage#after victor ABANDONED him he kinda just wandered around for a while#he didn’t even unalive anyone until about 2 years later#just go read the book#you’ll find that reinhardt’s story wasn’t even the tiniest bit accurate#overwatch halloween#overwatch#moira o'deorain#overwatch moira#junkrat#jamison fawkes#overwatch junkrat#overwatch 2#junkenstein#my stuff

#d/m quote of all time!!!!!!!#if my pinned wasn't the five watch party & i'd pin this.#silhouetted; limbs interwoven; fighting or dancing.#is it one creature or two? or two trying to become one?#who won? what does winning mean to them? does it matter?#is there such a thing as winning when the goal is this moment of struggle?#and i absolutely LOVE that this is all we see.#like to be clear this & the speaking gallifreyan quote are the only times we see the doctor & the master interact in this book.#lechasseur sees the tiniest glimpse. doesn't know how it started or how it works out.#doesn't know the long history or the long future between them.#and it's a perfect perfect way to have d/m in a story imo.#doctor x master#dw#(from 'the cabinet of light')

after doing a literature review of 13's book era, i conclude: what the fuck?? what the fuck????? what do you mean only 3 official BBC line books, At Childhood's End, 2 anthologies and then whatever Doctor of Oz is. And like. That's it. Those are the novels. From 2018 to 2022 those are the 13th Doctor novels, compared to 10 and 11 whole dozens of novels, 12s 3 novels per season and a supplemental heaping of audios (and probably some other anthologies and such I don't know about) 13 gets 4 novels and 2 anthologies. 6 books (7 if you count Doctor of Oz which I kinda do but it's part of a weird line) for 3 seasons, 4 years of being the Doctor, I just...
jesus christ
i think i'm always going to be mad about how snubbed 13 got in literally every direction
#every time i'm like maybe they didn't do her as dirty as they could have i remember this#the books have been in decline since 11 was doctor I will admit#but 12 got a decent amount of audio stories#i think 13 got one#and now that we've got ncuti the moment has passed#just-aaaaagh#the fact i have the majority of her books on my shelf right now#and i have 4 books. just FOUR#think of all the cool stories we could have gotten#even just another set from season 12#or a run of just yaz and the doctor being mean to each other i would have taken anything#i really hope they bring back doing the novels#doctor who#doctor who books#doctor who eu

love how there are pretentious video essays that just repeat the book and meander and ramble about house of leaves. it's what zampanó would have wanted. it is not, however, what I want
#anyway i finished the main portion of the book#all i have left is the poems and a few other small things i think? ive read pelafinas letters#im thinking of getting the full book of her letters#but also they severely messed with my head so we'll see#i will say. i do get why ppl say the book is pretentious and frustrating#there was a lot of stuff where i couldnt tell if it was supposed to be satire or if it was genuinely just that dense and pretentious#and a lot of the codes were rly obtuse imo?#like... idk. some of them were super obvious like the sos stuff or pelafina outright saying what to do#but others like. man how am i supposed to know johnny waxing poetic about pussy was coded#i mean that one is also pointed out though much later but i know i missed a lot just like it that werent pointed out#and ive heard theres a lot of shit where the message you get is just danielewski????? which gonna be real. kinda dumb.#but i did also really enjoy the book#there was a lot of stuff in it that was just so compelling or poignant or whatever other word#the minotaur stuff is good (ofc id say that though i love me some minotaur themes)#also a lot of the scenes with johnny just...... christ#idk how ppl say to skip them hes so fascinating#yeah i could do with him talking about his possibly hallucinated sex life a bit less but also his story is just plain interesting#i still think about the part where the girl he was talking to runs over a dog they had picked up........ it was fucking chilling#and his hallucinations of dying are so descriptive in just the right way to get under my skin#the uncertainty with him and his family..... did pelafina try to kill him? did his father just send her away for being a bit too overbearin#over an accident? was there something else? what was the deal with his foster family? with lude? gdansk man and kyrie?#how did it get published? who are the editors? why did the band know of the book before it should have been published?#why does his journal section end with a story from a man he admits to making up completely? the doctor from seattle doesnt exist#the chronological end is more hopeful with him saying things will be okay but then he puts a previous entry after that?#i think the burning of the book parallels the story nicely#johnny said his piece; he nurtured the book as much as he could; but it was hurting him and he had to give up on it#idk!#this book does make me feel a lil dumb ngl

Extend your arm forward, control your breathing, pull back, contain your emotions.
It was simple instructions, ones she used to only think about in the moment, but forget the second her attention was grabbed by something else.
Even with the growing noise around her, she never stopped her movements, keeping her focus and breathing even. That is, until she felt a light tap of a finger on her thigh.
"Excuse me, Jiějiě..." It was the voice of a young girl. Almost immediately, Xiaoyu opened her eyes and got into a standing position before looking down at her with a smile.
"Yes?"
The girl looked nervous, but there was no need for her to be. Xiaoyu gave her time to gather her thoughts, which didn't take very long, before she held her hands out towards her with a shy smile.
"I made you some bracelets! It's a present...as a thank you for everything you've done, a-and helping me."
"For me? Ah, Xièxiè! You're so sweet!" Xiaoyu gently took one of the bracelets, holding it up to the sun. It was stitched together with orange yarn, and what seemed to be glitter sparkling in the sunlight.
"I know it's not...exactly the best and it...might be a little tight since I didn't know your size but I wanted to share something with you..."
The girl shyly looked down, perhaps embarrassed by her stitching, but Xiaoyu easily placed it on her wrist.
"Fits like a glove!"
The girl seemed to beam at that, Xiaoyu quickly grabbing the other one and holding it out for her to place her hand through. Once the girl realized this, she eagerly placed her hand through.
"Hehe, see? We match!"
The girl laughed, something Xiaoyu hasn't heard in a while. It felt good to see her happy again.
"If...If I make you anything else, will you wear it?"
"Of course! I want to see how much your embroidery improves. Before long, you'll be teaching me something!"
"Me? Teaching you?" The girl sounded in disbelief.
"Yep! I was never good with my hands, at least with silk and a needle. It wasn't until Yéyé stepped in did I know what to do with them."
At the mention of him, the girl's mood seemed to dampen. It wasn't her intention but Xiaoyu couldn't blame her for it either. Jinrei knew how to make a name for himself, ever since he was young. Not having his spunk around anymore left an obvious hole, one that Xiaoyu didn't realize she missed until it was already too late.
"I miss him." The young girl's voice interrupted Xiaoyu's thoughts. She gave her a smile, and a gentle pat on the head.
"I do too. But it'll be okay, next time we meet up, I'll teach you a few things about stances while you keep teaching and showing me your sewing skills. Deal?"
"Deal!"
Xiaoyu held her pinky out, the young girl using her own pinky to complete the deal. After a few more exchanges, Xiaoyu waved the girl goodbye, watching her disappear in the distance before sighing.
She sat down on the grass, listening to everything around her this time. The wind, the laughter, the talking, the birds, the whistling.
She was spunky when she was young, childish too, maybe she got it from him. Xiaoyu didn't know anything about his life when he was younger, but she knew he got his wisdom from somewhere. She only learned about his connections to the Mishima family once she was older.
Maybe she would have turned out to be more traditional if he wasn't around, maybe she would have eventually gotten better with her sewing skills like her parents initially wanted.
Xiaoyu was loud, rambunctious, maybe even a troublemaker compared to her more relaxed parents. They didn't know what to do with her, so eventually, he would suggest her to put all that energy into fighting.
It was thanks to him that they changed their minds.
"I'm still learning, Yéyé. I've gotten better but...I still have a lot to learn. I won't let you down, I promise."
Her phone soon began to vibrate, the young girl glancing down to see a message from her father. She quickly took hold of it, seeing the time, and immediately letting out a yell.
"Ah, I'm late! They're gonna kill me!"
Metaphorically of course. Xiaoyu quickly gathered up her things, haphazardly placing her jacket into the bag as she stood to her feet, running off and away from the park. Eyes watched her curiously but she paid them no mind as she answered her phone.
"Yes, Bàba? No, I didn't oversleep, it's still..." She checked her watch. "...well, not morning anymore but it's not late! It's only after 12! I'm on my way right now! I'll pick up some jianbing on the way! Tell Māmā not to start without me!"
Maybe there were still quite a few things she needed to get better with.
#{ Testing out my writing skills kdgkf lets see if I still got it#wanted to write something about Xiao being in China visiting her parents or something. I don't know what part of China she'd be#from just yet but this is me just kind of rambling; it may or may not stick. I find myself actually reading a lot about#Chinese culture and stuff just in general even if its fictional stories; honestly just read a book about#a real life Chinese medical doctor back in the 1500s and its super interesting; ANYWAY THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS#if anyone reads it I hope it's enjoyable in its own way at least ^^#once again thanks as always for the patience~ Hope you're all doing great }
